A Day in the Life of a Teacher

By Leah Geoghegan

Hello and welcome to my blog! I am a graduate of Mary Immaculate College and I began teaching in 2017. I am currently working as a substitute teacher in Limerick. Working as a sub teacher enables me to gain an insight into a variety of different and inspiring classroom settings, picking up valuable ideas along the way! My aim for this blog is to share resources and lessons for both teachers and parents. Enjoy!

So what’s been happening so far?

Class Teacher for Multi-grade setting (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th)
(2017 – 2018)
I completed my NIPT induction year in a multigrade setting. I had an amazing tutor who gave great advice and encouraged me to think outside the box. We had a small school community consisting of three teachers and one SNA but the sense of school spirit was just as strong!

Class Teacher in an Autism Unit
(2018-2019)
I spent the first half of 2018 teaching in an Autism Unit. It was such a new setting for me – something that I had no experience in. First day nerves were as strong as ever but I learned more in those three short months than I had in my whole career up to that point.

Class Teacher in an Early Intervention Unit
(2019 – 2020)
So this is where I am now! I began in this classroom in late 2018 and have been there ever since. Once again, it was a new experience for me. All classrooms have the same purpose – to provide children with meaningful educational opportunities where they can succeed. However, what works for one won’t work for all and I have been learning new teaching strategies since!
